Life Legacy


Herbert L. Pitts, 88, went to be with his heavenly Father on February 23, 2007. He was born January 24, 1919 at Douglass, Kansas, the son of Ornan B. and Ruth Essie (Davis) Pitts. He married Myrtle K. Christians March 16, 1941 at Beaver, Kansas. Mr. Pitts was a farmer.

Mr. Pitts lived in Great Bend for the last fifteen years coming from the Claflin and Beaver area having lived there for 54 years. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend. He had been a member of the Beaver Friends Church for 54 years. He was a Sunday School teacher, a church board secretary, and a part of the van ministry and the music ministry of the church. He served on various boards of the Kansas Yearly Meeting of the Friends Church for 50 years. He had been president of the Holyrood Co-op and was on the Rural Water District Board. He loved people and had a ministry visiting people in the hospital or in their homes. Most of all he loved his family and loved his Lord.

Surviving Mr. Pitts include his wife, Myrtle, of the home; one son, Donald Pitts, Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Jerree Ehrlich and husband, Larry of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Kim Sell and husband, Roger of Great Bend, Kansas; Tami Flaspohler and husband, Kevin, Ponca City, Oklahoma; Kara Potter and husband, Jeff, Claflin, Kansas; Tonia Jordan and husband, Jason, Bixby, Oklahoma; and nine great-grandchildren, Connor and Kendal Sell; Ryan, Jake and Luke Flaspohler; Annie and Zoe Potter; Jaxon and Lexi Jordan. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Aubert Pitts, Carlisle Pitts, Alden Pitts, and Kenneth Pitts; and five sisters, Iona Ruddell, Verna White, Ruth Fry, Ada Engberg, and Margaret Bowdle.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2007 at First Church of the Nazarene, Great Bend, Kansas. The Reverends Robert Castile and Mark Pennington will officiate. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington, Kansas. Friends may call Sunday, February 26, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established with Compassionate Care, First Church of the Nazarene or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
